Yes. A GBAO permit is required to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), including Khorog, Murghab, and Ishkashim.

If you plan to visit Lake Sarez, a separate permit issued by the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Tajikistan (CoES) is also required. We can assist with this permit as well.

Foreign nationals (including Russian citizens) who stay in Tajikistan for more than 10 working days are required to register with the Passport Registration Service (OVIR) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Important: If you are staying at a hotel, the hotel administration usually completes the registration for you automatically. If you are staying in a guesthouse, hostel, or private accommodation, make sure to confirm whether they provide this service. Failure to register may result in a substantial fine (approximately USD 400) when leaving Tajikistan.

The national currency of Tajikistan is the Somoni (TJS). Payments are generally accepted only in somoni.

Bank cards: In Dushanbe and Khujand, Visa and Mastercard are accepted in major shopping centers and hotels. In the Pamir region and mountain areas, only cash is accepted. ATMs outside the capital may often be empty or may not accept foreign bank cards.

Digital payments: In Tajikistan, especially in Dushanbe, many places support contactless payments through Google Pay and Apple Pay, making payments more convenient for international travelers.

Recommended banks: For convenient payments and financial services in Tajikistan, we recommend using Alif Bank.

Advice: Bring cash in US dollars or euros for exchange. Banknotes should be new, clean, and without stamps, marks, or handwritten notes.

In major cities, 4G mobile internet is available through operators such as Tcell, MegaFon, and ZET-Mobile.

Important: To purchase a local SIM card, you need to provide your passport and registration (if you stay in the country for more than 10 days).

In the Pamir region, mobile coverage is limited. The connection may often disappear, and mobile internet usually works only at 2G speed.

IMEI registration: If you plan to use a local SIM card for more than 30 days, your phone must be registered in Tajikistan's national IMEI system.

The best time depends on the purpose of your trip:

• Fan Mountains and Pamirs: From late June to mid-September (roads are open and mountain passes are usually free of snow).
• City tours: March–May (flowering season and Navruz holiday) and September–October (fruit season and mild warm weather).
• Winter: January–February are suitable only for skiing holidays (Safed-Dara). Roads to the Pamirs are often closed due to avalanches.

Tajikistan is considered a safe country with a low level of street crime. The main risks for travelers are related to natural conditions, especially in mountainous areas. Mountain sickness: Travelers visiting high-altitude areas above 3,000 meters should be aware of the risk of altitude sickness and take proper acclimatization measures.

Water safety: Drinking tap water is not recommended. Always use bottled or properly filtered water during your stay in Tajikistan.

Travel insurance: For trekking, hiking, and mountain expeditions, it is strongly recommended to have insurance that covers active activities and adventure travel. We recommend arranging suitable travel insurance before your trip.

Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan can enter Tajikistan without a visa. For Russian citizens, the visa-free stay is available for up to 90 days. For citizens of other countries, the allowed period depends on bilateral agreements and is usually 30–90 days.

The Government of the Republic of Tajikistan adopted Resolution No. 464 of October 26, 2021, introducing a unilateral visa-free regime for citizens of selected foreign countries.

Under this resolution, effective January 1, 2022, citizens of the following 52 countries may enter, stay in, and depart from the Republic of Tajikistan without a visa for up to 30 days.
