A Journey to the Beginning of Time: Why You Should Visit Ancient Sarazm in Tajikistan

Imagine walking on land where people lived long before the rise of the Roman Empire, before the pyramids of Egypt were built, before writing emerged in Mesopotamia. A land that already had society, trade, metallurgy, and art. This is not fiction this is Sarazm, one of the oldest settlements in Central Asia, located in western Tajikistan, just 15 kilometers from the city of Penjikent.

Sarazm is an archaeological wonder, discovered by chance in the 1970s. Local residents began finding strange objects in the fields: shards of pottery, bronze tools, ornaments. One of them, a veteran named Ashurali Tailonov, showed a discovered axe to archaeologist Abdullojon Isakov. That moment marked the beginning of one of the region’s most important discoveries. Excavations revealed not just a village, but a major center of an ancient civilization that lived here around 5,000 years ago.

Here, people already knew how to build houses from clay bricks, erect ritual structures, and engage in crafts and trade. They smelted bronze and made jewelry from semi-precious stones, sea shells, copper, and tin, which came from distant lands present-day Iran, India, and the coast of the Arabian Sea. This proves that Sarazm had well-developed trade relations and played an important role in the economic life of the ancient world. The atmosphere of this place is striking: earthen mounds and hollows conceal the remains of urban structures, workshops, and even reservoirs. According to rough estimates, the ancient settlement covered about 130 hectares, but archaeologists have only excavated a small portion, and many discoveries are still ahead.

One of the most famous finds is the burial of a woman nicknamed the “Princess of Sarazm.” Her remains were found in 1980 in remarkably well-preserved condition. She was buried in a richly adorned outfit necklaces, bracelets, objects made of bronze and stones all indicating her high social status. Scientists believe she belonged to the noble class of society, and her burial has become a symbol of how complex and developed this society was 5,000 years ago.

Sarazm was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. It is not just an archaeological treasure it is a living chronicle of the birth of civilization on the territory of Tajikistan. It was here that the paths of farmers transitioning from a nomadic to a settled lifestyle crossed with those of the nomadic peoples of the Eurasian steppes. Not only trade, but also cultural exchange took place here. The first signs of social structure and urban culture in the region were beginning to take shape.

What is particularly interesting is that Sarazm did not fall under the onslaught of conquerors, as many ancient cities did. It was not destroyed by fire or cursed. It disappeared gradually, almost imperceptibly. Researchers believe that climate change was the reason for its decline. Drought pushed the inhabitants closer to water sources, where new settlements later emerged, including ancient Penjikent. Today, as you walk through Sarazm, it feels like stepping into the past. You can see the remains of ancient homes, ritual buildings, pottery fragments, tools, jewelry everything that has been preserved under the earth for five thousand years. Sometimes you may even encounter archaeologists still working on-site. They are still searching for the answer to the main question: why did the inhabitants leave Sarazm? Was it a natural disaster, disease, migration, or something more?

Visiting this place, you feel history come alive. It’s not just a tourist spot on the map it’s a place of power, where you feel part of the eternal flow of time. After walking among the ruins, be sure to visit the National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan in Dushanbe, where the “Princess of Sarazm” and other excavation finds are housed.

Sarazm is not just an excursion. It is a spiritual and intellectual journey into the origins of civilization.

It is a chance to glimpse into the distant past to better understand the present. And if you are looking for a journey that will truly change your perception of the world, then you absolutely must come here.
